When I was in Sydney a female friend rode over a brown snake in Oxford Falls once.
I stopped just in time for a brown to hear up at me!! Kind of ruined the ride as I was looking at every stick from then on.
We saw a baby adder once on a ride in the New Forest.
No, it wasn't quite a s scary as that 😀
I was walking down a kloof in South Africa and the person in front of me grabbed a sapling for balance, shaking it. A black snake about the same size as that fell out into the stream with a plop and swam away fast. "See that? " asked the Afrikaaner guide, "That was a mamba!"
It's taken me years to stop taking avoiding action when I see a branch on the track.
30 years in Oz and a boyhood in the African bush is hard to shake off. 🙂
I had a rat do exactly the same thing on a ride once.
Ran straight into the wheel and made a comedy 'ping' noise before it rolled off into the bushes.
Stopped and looked for it but it had disappeared. Glad it didn't get stuck. Could have been messy.
Reminds me of the film Snakes on a Plane

And then, with butter irony, you'll run over an adder in Scotland and get bitten.
I very nearly ran over a snake that big by Tesco on the Taff Trail in Cardiff.
I nearly ran over an adder which was having a kip in the middle of some singletrack near Loch Builg in the Cairngorms!
A black adder slithered over my bike whilst I was having a lunch break in Epping forest last year. I wasn't on the bike ,it was laying in some grass.
Not 30 metres from Karl tea hut for those that know the area.!
Bunny hopped over a stick on a trail in Western Australia, turned out was a dugite.
Saw an adder on the trails near Aboyne. I knew it was an adder, because I asked it what is 2 + 2, and it said 4. Didn't even hesitate.
That happened to us, except it was a badger.

Sharp.

What's that about?
I ran over an adder in the New Forest, following a mate down narrow ST and he must have hit it first, it was just looking back at me as I came towards it...I'm not sure how to describe its face, but it looked as bewildered as much as I must have looked terrified. I swerved last minute and hope I missed it.
Poor bugger
