[#7892775]

So, Its been a long wait! But i now finally have in my possession a Smokestone Henderson. In fact i was the first person to purchase one from Graham of Smokestone bikes. Went for Flo green after falling in love with the colour on a visit to Slam69. My OOF has been used a donor bike. Really chuffed with it! I looks stunning in the flesh, well thought out and weight wise has weighed in 400g lighter than my OOF with headset and seat clamp. Including rear axle. Chomping at the bit to finish the build and take it for a ride. Sadly I have to work! Will post some pictures of the build once complete and pull together a ride report.

Spec:
Medium Smokestone - Kermit green
XT 8000 11 speed
Aefect cranks with absolute black oval ring
SLX Brakes
Sixc carbon bars
150mm Reverb B1
Bluto 100mm (May change to 120mm following ride)
DT Swiss BR710's on Fatsno hubs
Jumbo Jim rear, Nate front - Tubeless

Forgive my ignorance but is this the same smokestone bikes who used to make the e-stay frames in the early nineties?

No need for photos, I'll take your word for it. Good for you!

Like the purple touches.

Looks like a fairly bog standard off the peg aluminim frame with some shonky graphics. Has spam69 just nicked an on-one fatty trail and repainted it ๐Ÿ˜‰

However, new bike feeling is ace as are the majority of fatbikes so have fun with it

Just looking on the website and it says "We've also stuck with the regular threaded bottom bracket to enable you to fit a wide range of cranks."

Does that mean a 78mm bottom bracket, but still the ability to fit 4" tyres - only bike i've seen do that is the Tumbleweed, and that was only if you were using Rohloff - how have they managed it with the Henderson?

cheers

Love the colour- the purple goes well too!

What's all this hate for Slam69? Keep hearing it from riders and online. Anyway, ignore it op. Doesn't take anything away from that bike 8)

it is a nice colour, "Astroturf green", which is probably part of the issue and why they have been kicked off god knows how many fatbike forums and facebook groups.

its a shame as some of the sponsored riders are good guys

Same brand, Slam69 owners bought the rights I believe.

I think it means standard 100m threaded bb, not press fit etc.

I like the look of the frame, great colour, not mad on the down tube graphics. Would consider one myself but the frame costs pretty much the same as my whole Fat bike..
Love the wheels.

Not quite right. Graham was part of the orignal partnership of Smokestone bikes. He sold it on and the business the ceased trading a few years later i believe.

As for BB, its standard threaded type but 100mm so a larger choice of fatbike cranks. I used a Hope BB (Already in my old On One) and Raceface Aeffect cranks.

Cheers pal,
I have ignored it. Its easy to forget how "interesting" some people on the internet can be...

Just to clear this up, the Smokestone Henderson is my design. The only simularity is the fact it has a dropped top tube. Geo, dropouts, headtube and just about everything else is different. Especially the quality.

Info is on our website.

I got a set of fatbike wheels built up for my by the good folk at Slam69. There were a few delays (Hurry up Hairy, Come on ๐Ÿ™‚ ), but Graham did a good job of keeping me informed of progress and the wheels themselves have been great. No complaints.

There are two types of forums.

Those which slam69 is referred to as spam69 because you're seemingly in every topic selling something.

Those which become a slam69 circlejerk in which the answer to any question is "xxxxx which you can get from @slam69 @grahamfoot @rsebiscuits #fappingsohardrightnow" (UK fatbikes facebook group being the top of that particular chart).

The only person who actually manages to be more off putting is that second hand bike guy who posts up a new 'blog' about how bad it it buying secondhand bikes and that everyone should buy secondhand stuff from the secondhand shop he owns.

everything else is different. Especially the quality.

See, I've just bought a fatty trail frame. So need new wheels, forks and cranks. There's a lot of places selling blutos, X9 cranks, etc for very similar prices, coming onto forums and slagging off other peoples frames isn't exactly endearing your shop to me.

Jeez, wish I hadn't posted this now!! To be fair to Hishairyness given some of he harsh posts above, I think he should be allowed a right to reply. For the record...Not that anyone has questioned it. I am a paying customer, whom bought the frame because I liked the numbers, look and ethos behind it. Slam69 is my LBS and have always been great to me as a customer. Furthermore they put allot back into local riding, supporting young talented riders. Whilst also looking out for us normal folk with group rides, events etc. I get that Slam posts on facebook pages and that boils some peoples piss. But its easy to click "block" or ignore...

I had not replied with a finished build picture or ride report as it was obvious there was some kind of personal vendetta and frankly life is too short to get involved with these things. I am just a chap who loves riding his bike and likes spending my time with other friendly people of a similar mindset. I just don't really understand how some people can be so damning on a keyboard and try to damage a small business?

Pretty much!
I remember you left one of the Facebook fat bike forums because while you were trying to sell something (advertised your shop) to someone in a post, someone else came along and pointed out the item was cheaper elsewhere, you left, seemingly, in a huff because someone dared to mention that you were not the only fat bike shop and that you are quite expensive!

I have now blocked you on FB, so I don't have to see all your sales posts all the time.

russyh, that looks like it'll be very nice when its finished, I have a OO Fatty Trail frame too, Im sure you'll like yours ๐Ÿ™‚

For the record, I own an original OOF frame still and looked at the trail. But I had issues with my original fatty (the frame cracked a common fault - just below the seat tube gusset)It was out of warranty so i bought a new one, it was a great bike. There were several things I didn't like about it and the trail wasn't doing it for me. I wanted Stealth reverb routing bolt through rear axle etc. I get your comment is a sly loaded one...Having seen both bikes side by side they are not the same. I suspect you have not?

I notice that the (nicely finished) stealth routing cable entry on seat tube is centered on the tube - I assume there no concerns about stress risers at this point?

Good question Slim Jim, I dont know the answer to that. Guessing neither do you? My question would be (I am no engineer) that with it being a round tube wherever you place the "Hole" its going to be at some kind of central point. Granted I am no engineer. I followed the whole process of development of the frame. Luckily for me Slam is my LBS. The bike has gone through umpteen prototypes all being ridden harder than most will ever see. None of which were painted and investigated after each ride. I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but the position of the hole is similar to whyte, Cotic and a few other manufacturers bikes. I am happy to report back any issues to the community here.

That's building into a nice looking fat bike. Good colour combo.

Coolio.
I only ask as I've read that centralised holes such as that have been Believed to contribute to stress rise cracks in some cases. Something to do with the direction of stresses on the seat tube. Hence why most stealth holes these are positioned to one side these days.

As I said above though, it's a nicely executed feature.

I don't like the bright coloured nextie rims bit too in your face....says the man with the bright green fat wheeled bike! Plus they don't really save any weight over the br710's if I was to go nextie it would be stealth rims

Looking good there russyh, be interested to see the complete build & here how it rides, currently have a oof trail & was looking at upgrading the frame, the Henderson is one of the few fat frames that will take a 130mm Bluto it seems, just wish they could have managed to add some more bottle cage mounts under the downtube, would have been handy for extended adventures!

[img] [/img]

There we go, have ridden it a few times now. It's fantastic! I am running 100mm bluto RL at the moment and have decided I am going to run 120mm. Was going to just change the air shaft , but have decided to upgrade to rct3 while I'm at it. To be honest by the time I have sold the fork it shouldn't cost too much more and as its a new frame it would be nice to have new forks. Probably an indulgence not needed but what the hell.

My favourite feature of the bike has to be the bolt through axle, it really stiffens up the back end beautifully. Something I always hated about the on one fatty. Bike feels pretty precise in terms of handling which in my experience is not something you would often say about a suspensiond fat bike.

As for bottle mounts. I get what your saying but I prefer the stealth routing over double bottle mounts. I hate under down tube mounts after riding through the FOD in the winter on my old Kona! Mouthfuls of all sorts of crap! If I ever do big days in the saddle I always take a hydration pack now. I am tempted to look for frame bags though as I am not a fan of big weight on my back.

All in all so far I am really happy with how it's turned out. Sure their is that placebo of new bike feeling currently. But glad I purchased one and the fact I was the first makes it all the more fuzzy.

Personally, I find Graham and all at Slam69 to be extremely amenable and keen to help/provide sound advice. Surely utilising every opportunity to promote your business, be it FB,forums or whatever, is what makes you a good businessman.
We have a little fattie splinter group over here and we visit Slam and the guys for little FB weekends. We are accepted and treated to some expert guiding on some awesome trails.

All in all, in my/our opinion, a great shop and some of the best guys we've ridden with.

We've all bought bikes and parts from Graham and have no complaints (He's building my Hightower as we speak)

Just thought I'd throw that in the mix.

Russy - might be interested in the Blutonif you're going to shift it.

Henderson and Hightower are great names.

Slimjim. No worries, I am away over the weekend (next as well) and dropped my bike into slam as they are holding a fat bike event and demo day so I offered them my bike for display as it's currently the only green one built. I have told them to fit the forks whilst I'm away. So it's likely to be a week before they are available. Drop me an email if you are interested.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Couple more tweaks to get it just how I want it. Not riding now for a couple of weeks due to other commitments and its driving me crackers! Was pointed out that whilst I loaned the bike to Slam69 for the fat FOD even that I may of embarrassingly fitted my Jumbo Jim back to front on the rear. Its been performing brilliantly that way and the tread profile doesn't seem hugely different by direction. Will swap it around so its correct and flush my head down the toilet in shame.
