Never considered this before today when my broadband router decided to die.

I have a bkool pro, which works with zwift, but what happens if i have no internet?? do they work in anyway? are there any offline apps that can control the resistance etc?

Presuming that your broadband provider will be replacing the router in a reasonable time frame, could you get away with using your phone to broadcast a hotspot for the trainer?

You could try GoldenCheetah, it can connect to some trainers. Think it would all work offline.
Or IpBike on Android.

If your trainer supports ANT+ FE-C, it should let you control resistance etc.

My Garmin 520 edge will control my smart trainer. Set it to indoor mode and you can manually bump resistance up or down on the menu. It also lets you re-ride routes and simulates them, though I have never had any luck getting it to do this with any degree of satisfaction
