I've been running a 42/11 xt block for a while and recently put a new chain on, long story short gears 9/10/11 are worn so just got a new cassette but went for a 40/11.
Question is will I need to shorten the chain to fit? if poss I want to have the option to change the easier gears out if I can?

Won't 'need' to. Tbh 2 teeth difference won't make much difference. You'll probably not notice.

Your bike will explode in a fireball and kill you to death if you leave the chain too long. Or maybe it'll be fine as mattbee said.
