Any recommendations?

I have a Gore active shell, which is great if it's heavy rain but does not pack down small enough to fit in my jersey pockets for all day rides.

This is for road use and cost not an issue

I wouldn't pay 250 notes for a dhb one. I've got one and it's too short at the back, sweaty and leaks at the seams. Actually I'll let you have it for £200. Or 150 and a packet of Haribou?

In the best stw tradition I'll suggest what I have. Alpkit now make one called the gravitas. 120 made from 3 layer 7d fabric.

I've had mine for a few weeks and have managed to see a not of rain on that time. It works well so far

Endura MTR emergency shell? I've used mine a few times, and while it's not as breathable as my Gore AlpX active shell, it's far lighter and packs down to slightly bigger than a cricket ball.

I like my Sportful Hot Pack 5. Fits in a Jersey pocket and does keep you dry, though like most it will get sweaty if it is warm or you are exerting yourself.

I managed to find the Rab Flashpoint in a sale a while back and it's great - fully waterproof, light and packs down small.

Thanks for the recommendations, the Castelli Idro (gore active shell) looks the perfect size and but i cant seem to find it for sale anywhere yet, and it seems to be only available in black (id prefer something more visible)

After years or searching for a nice emergency jacket I settled on the Arcteryx Incendo.
It's fitted so isn't flappy and it has a nice hood. The sides are very well vented and it picks up in a small ball.

Theyre £90 but sports pursuit do them half price from time to time. Well worth £90 if you need one now.

I have had a few cheap waterproofs over my time but ultimately found them disappointing in terms of breathability, features, pack size or cut. whilst im happy to find a bargain i am after a high performance shell so i appreciate the associated cost.

Although I tipped the Castelli, I've been using the Altura Pocket Rocket as an emergency shell for the last few years and echo fifeandy's comments. For the £40 I paid, it's been worth it on the dozen or so times I've donned it.

Castelli Idro

Does look good but read that the fabric doesn't take too kindly to be scrunched up. Would probably hold out for some more reviews.

I have a Madison Premio for those rainy road rides. It's 20,000mm waterproof and 30,000gms breathability and packs into a jersey pocket.

Endura Pakajak - seems ok... you'll probably get as wet inside if it's hot, but ... better than nothing

How about the Rapha pro team race cape or the rapha rain jacket?

Both available in colours other than black. I have a few rapha jackets and they really are fantastic, the hardshell jacket is an amazing bit of kit, kept me dry on a 5 hour ride in pissing rain.

Not sure how small they pack down but it's free to send them back if they don't suit.

Plus there's a 20% discount available until midnight tonight with this code SU1-P8K7-9T5M-7D55

I have an Altura one which packs small enough to put in a jersey pocket. I think i paid £28 from Evans and its fine for short heavy showers.

The new gore fabric can only be made in black at the moment apparently. There's also a gore version http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/product-news/gore-one-gore-tex-active-jacket-204186

I've just ordered the Marmot Essence jacket from sportpursit as an all round packable jacket.
It hasn't arrived yet but might be worth taking a look. Gets good reviews...

I've a montane one that's great.

My Montane Pertex is ideal for a 'get out of trouble' jacket. Packs down tiny and is shower and windproof. I wouldn't wear it as a regular jacket offroad though as that light weight and tiny pack size translates into a pretty fragile jacket.

Amazing how my brain discounted that between the top and the bottom of the thread...

I stand by everything other than the "I wouldn't wear it as a regular jacket offroad". 😉

Recently picked up an Arcteryx Incendo as mentioned above from Cotswold Rock Bottom shop in Betws y Coed for £45.

Packs down inside it's own pocket, well vented under the arms. Available with or without hood, and in some nice visible colours.

I bought an Endura FS260 Race Cape in clear for something to keep in a jersey pocket when riding on the road and it's proved it's worth over the last winter.
It's pretty bright in the clear and will let everyone see tour money no object jersey as well 🙂

It's pretty bright in the clear

So it's a transparent jacket but it's bright?

I bought a Solo wind jacket from sport pursuit for commuting and it's been pretty good - it's £55.99

A lot of the above recommendations aren't actually waterproof only windproof. How much do you need a proper waterproof?

Translucent rather than clear would be a better description and with a fair amount of reflective detailing so yes it manages to be both see through and bright.
It also slightly baffles me in how it works as water doesn't bead on the surface but neither does it seem to wet out and breathabity seems good as well. Maybe it's just magic?

The Castelli Sottile jacket is justifiably popular thanks to its low bulk and the fact that it's actually slightly stretchy so it fits snugly and doesn't flap. I used mine on the 2014 London 100 that was shortened to 86 miles due to the American hurricane and I've never ridden in rain as heavy, yet, to my amazement, the jacket kept me dry. The rain really was biblical.

Doesn't quite meet your requirements, but I've been very impressed with my berghaus hypersmock 2. It's not designed for cycling and it has a hood but it's quite close cut so I carry it with me for my commute, its the worlds lightest waterproof. It's lighter than many of my windproofs

Fits pretty well on the bike, and easy to carry for just in case use. Seriously, this thing is tiny, like smaller than an apple!
