[Closed] SLX thumb shifter not returning - likely cause?

[#5965682]

Took my wife's Stumpjumper for a quick spin earlier as it's not been used in a while.
The RHS thumb shifter changes gears OK when pushed but doesn't spring back when released.

Take it apart and lube or is it likely something's knackered?

Cheers.

Cable requires lubrication or replacement?

Check the spring in the rear mech, or remove and replace the seized inner and outer cables, its also possible the shifter is faulty

First port of call would be to remove the grub screw and give it a decent blast of GT85, just to repel any moisture or corrosion that might be causing it. If this works, you haven't had to take anything to bits. Then look at the cable, but if you say it is still changing ok in both directions it probably isn't that. Otherwise it will be the spring in the shifter. I've had a couple do this, but it has always been crash damage. If it is seized a good squirt of GT85 might do the trick.

That's it. Fill it until it drips out of the bottom of the casing. If that doesn't fix it, and your cables are good, it's most likely knackered

I've fixed so many shifters like this it's untrue.

Make sure to cover your discs and rotors before nailing it with GT85, though, or you'll be forking out for new pads at least!

PP is right, though, if you effectively fill it with GT85 then any moisture will be dispersed.

I'm not so sure it's anything to do with moisture TBH. I reckon the assembly grease goes gloopy and/or it fills with crap which sticks the mechanism up. GT85 just flushes it all out, as it's a solvent as well as a lubricant.
Just keep flushing it out and actuating the shifter until it works, then report back to thank us. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good point on covering the discs too.

Before doing anything, check it isn't pressing up against the underside of the brake lever.

OK I'll go nuts on the shifter with the GT 85 tomorrow

Ha, yeah, learnt that the hard way already!

Cheers guys.

Coatsey - I'll check, it was working fine when last used so I don't think anything could have happened to physically move the shifter, but worth a look to rule it out.
Cheers.
