Gonna buy me a set of SLX shifters to replace some tired 9-year-old deore thumb-achers. Also thought I'd marry them with an XTR cable set. Do you think it's worth going mad and splashing out on the posh cables as I've always been El Cheapo up to now?

Just buy SP41 outer (£23 for 10m from Parker International) & ptfe coated inners (Fibrax ones are £2 from UK bike store).

If you wanted consistent performance, go for full-length outer with a cable oiler 6" from the rear mech.

As Rondo, Though I went with the XTR inners & kit to get the end seals & 'tongued' end caps. Run with continuous SP41 outers, still shifts as slick as the day they went on about 500 miles ago. And it is Slick. 😀

I run XT shifters and mechs with SP41 outer. I stuck a £4 Jagwire teflon coated cable in there and shifting is the best I've ever had.

So long as you use reasonable quality inners you should be fine.

Just changed over from SLX to XT shifters and XTR cable set. Massive improvement. Will probably go for cheaper teflon cable inners next time.

Any recommendations on cable oilers? And do they actually make a difference?

Grease for cables not oil, sp41 is pre-greased internal, oil just breaks down the grease and ruins it.

I use xtr cables replace inners every year, and inners & outers every 2 years, never need to bother oiling or greasing always perfect shifting. Probably more than I need to do, but its just part of my spring strip down and rebuild, I prefer to keep everything in top nick rather than waiting for it to start going crappy.

Middleburn cable oilers, IMO it does help to place one 6 inches up from the mech as you can then flush the end out with an aerosol (grease based one).

Grease based aerosol? Guessing that isn't GT85 like I have used then...
What is recommended?

Use Rock and roll cable lube when installing
