How does it differ from the triple? Can someone measure from the base of the clamp to to the bottom of the cage? vertical height?
How doe sit prevent the chain coming off unlike a normal triple mech?
Hard to get an exact measurement but from the base of the clamp to the bottom of the cage I make it about 10mm.... Not fitted mine yet though
The profile of the arc is tighter, about the same as a shimano bash guard, so it's fits nicer.
the cage is a bit shorter as well to give more tyre clearance on some frames in the granny
The spring seems stronger as mine hasn't seized yet, unlike every other triple I've owned.
I think it's mainly to do with the arc as Tom_DB says, giving a better change between cogs with greater differences in teeth number... think the slx double is 22-36 rather than 22-32 for the bottom and middle on a triple.
It also has less movement so even with a triple shifter if won't move any higher up.
No issues with mine in 8 months or so of (ab)use ๐
I run the SLX double mech (top swing) and it works well on a double+bash setup, as you'd expect, but mine has developed some play in the bushings and you can tell by looking at it that it's not as robustly built as, say, an XT mech. Maybe the conventional swing design is tougher?
What would be nice is an XT-quality double mech but AFAIK there isn't one. Maybe the Saint mech is XT level?
Buy one. Had XT before but never worked right as double. SLX double specific just works, to do with arc of swing.
