[#2430791]

Off topic I know but at least I stick to 26" wheels for my road cycling.

What is the consensus for a semi slick tyre that has good volume and is fast rolling, light & tough?

I've been using Specialised Hemispheres 1.9 for a few years but its time to change

Is it used entirely on tarmac? If so then why not proper slicks rather than semis?

mostly tarmac with a bit of towpath - I just thought you couldn't get slicks around the 1.9 size

Just an example. There are loads of proper slicks for MTB anywhere from 1" up to 2.5".

Schwalbe Big Apple in a 2" might fit the bill.

Have been running 2.0 Big Apples for about 9 months and they're great. But I have nothing to compare them with. Had 2 punctures and about 2 unidentified 'slowies' in approx 1000 miles (80% tarmac). So reliability is pretty good IMO. I'm just not sure how much faster I'd be on something slicker/thinner.

I just wish they did a 1.75. All in all, I'd say give them a go.

EDIT: some of those off-road miles were proper rocky - tyres didn't give in but naturally you have to compensate in terms of speed and line etc. Like most slicks they're pants in the slippery stuff though - but that's a given IMO anyway.

conti travel contacts - guaranteed puncture proof and nearly are - you get a new tyre and tube if it punctures. Fast rolling with a little knobble on the edge

Very good tyres for road with occasional forays offraod

Wot TJ sed. ๐Ÿ™‚

As quick as slicks on tarmac, but with an extra little bit of cornering grip on softer/looser stuff. Excellent 'Jack of all trades' type tyre. Would probbly be quite good on hardpacked surfaces in summer, too.

Schwalbe Big Apples are very good too, but a bit hefty. The big 2.3" ones are fun on a street bike around town, as they are like having an inch of suspension both ends. Very tough.

Spesh Nimbus for an everyday commuting slick. Armadillo version is near puncture proof. Last ages, very quick.
