You could try fitting a Forward Components EBB or an Excentriker with your XT cranks - much neater than a tensioner (am I right in thinking the Hummer's got vertical dropouts?) Then just stick a set of spacers and a nice fat cog on the back and you're off.

Not tried it mind, but it would be the way I'd go if I had a vertical dropout frame and wanted it SS. Don't forget to take the mechs, levers and cables off too! 😉

it can be done for free! see below:

take off the shifters

at the front remove front mech + cable, granny ring + bolts and big ring. get some washers to space out your chainring bolts to fasten a single ring in place (alternately use a bash ring where the outer went or some single ring bolts)

at the back remove the cassette and rear mech cable, take the 16T sprocket and slide that onto the cassette body. at this point you'll need spacers, either the plastic spacers from a couple of old cassettes (from you box of stuff or from you LBS) or external BB spacers are also the rigt size, or bits of plastic pipe or spend £20 on a spacer kit!

you'll need to shorten your chain

for a tensioner you can just use the rear mech you have, rather than spent £20 on a rear mech. put the cable inner into the mech and pull it right through until the metal nipple stops inside the barrel adjuster, put the mech roughly in line with the 16T sprocket and tighten up the cable, you'll end up cutting the cable to about 4cm. you can then fine tune the position of the mech with thr barrel adjuster.

hey presto - free SS conversion using your lightweight 9s bits not heavy 1 1/8" parts and an expensive tensioner and spacer kit.

hope that is helpful and makes sense

rob has it - it's what i did basically with cassette spacers and an on one tensioner ....... et voila 😀

although i did need a fork (bought an on one CF 26" and i now also have a 29" front wheel, thereby a SS 69'er 😀

weighs in at 22.4lbs.

I did mine last week. I have been riding an On-One inbred SS for years and the Hummer geared....

Now the Hummer is singlespeeded up its just worlds better than having gears and the on-one.

Middleburn cranks, Dmr tensioner, Carbon bars and post, Hope hubs and 128gram seat. 21 lbs

if you get lucky you can find the magic set up where you don't need a gumpy looking tensioner and it all works beautifully if not get a half link from charlie the bike monger. I've always had problems with tensioners on single speeds (dmr, on-one, surly, old mech etc..)
Have a look at sheldons website for gear ratios etc.... and you should be sweet.

have fun

I really wish I'd kept mine and SS'd it with some rigid carbon forks on. Too late now, sadly. :0(
