As above really- I'm thinking about a new commuter (after mine was stolen at the weekend) and wondering if it would be an option to get something like, say, a Genesis Day One Cross or Pompino and then put an Alfine on it at a later date? Would the spacing/dropouts/whatever allow it?
I'm aware of the Day One Alfine coming out soon, and also the Cotic Roadrat, but just wondering what other options are out there at the moment.
I swapped my Trek Soho S for a Cotic Rat with Alfine with discs. I like it, very comfy, rear wheel on off is a faff though.
On-One are doing the Pompetamine £600-1000 with Alfine hub and disk brakes?
That Pompetamine is pretty nice actually... Only things are I would probably want Vs 'cos discs are thief magnets IMO, and also I was thinking about drops.
Edit: Just seen the drop version!
discs are thief magnets
That's true, might be worth giving them a call to see if they could do a drop version with Vs
I would love this if it comes out at a cyclescheme price 😉

Ive done quite a few alfine/nexus conversions and they work well.
any sliding/slotted drop frame is fine, cable routing is often the trikyest bit but if you dont mind cable ties or band on stops its no problem.
you can now get road sti shifters for 7/8 spd hubs (versa vrs8 @ about £180) which make pretty much any retrofit possible (if expensive)
Personally Ive got a road rat and karate monkey with alfine 8 s and they are both great!

So the spacing isn't a problem then? I only ask because a bike shop just told me they thought it would be (on a Day One anyway).
I've an old pompino frame I've just added an alfine too. Both are 135mm spacing, so if you have a roadie spacing (120mm) you will have difficulites cramming the hub in unless it's a steel frame you can realiegn.
Bonus with the older pompino frame is that it's set up for V's - been given a set of XTR to replace the deore I have on there atm.
Works well as a commuter/pub bike and I'm liking the simplicity of SS with gears. Just hope it's as reliable as the alfine I have on the hardtail, come november it'll be 2 years without any maintence.
lots of singlespeeds are 120mm (track spacing) and i wouldn't want to try and open that out to 135mm for the alfine.
130mm (road) steel frames should open out; but i doubt there're actually that many about.
120 to 135 is pushing it a bit but....

Ive done this for 120mm spacing to 130mm with no problems (even the paint was OK)
I wouldnt do it to your nicest bike 😯
or anything but basic cro mo (531 etc)
Ive done these conversions in bike shops with repeated sucess (under the tutilage of older wiser mechanics to begin with)
Day One is 135mm spacing on the SS frame so you could go to an Alfine easily.
