Hi, just wondering what a good ratio for a single speed road bike would be, I can't afford to replace all the gear malarky so am planning on single speeding. I'm guessing the MTB 32:16 will be way too low for the road?

My charge has 42:16 on it and it's pretty good for an average 15-16mph speed thru London at non bonkers cadances

48/18 which is roughly the same as 42/16 but means I can use a WI trials freewheel which has a great takeup.

I run the same as Steve and find it pretty versatile - depends on your local topography of course, but I haven't had to walk up anything yet!

Alright cheers, will probably do a 44:16 then. I don't anticipate doing too many hills so I'm sure I'll manage.
Thanks everyone.

46:16 or 48:16 for London use here. I've managed to do a hilly 100 miler on 46:16

I run 42:18 on my Roadrat for mixed road / off road which is nigh on perfect for the undulating hills around here but I do sometimes spin out on long flat road sections. if I was doing road only then 42:16 would be spot on. 44:16 should be fine if it's not too hilly where you live
