1993 Rigid steel Mountain bike - making it into a commuter bike to sit at a train station.
4 miles flat each way and using slick tyres on road - there are gravel flat options available too.
What ratio should I get? I chucked the cassette in the bin as it was rusty but should have kept it to work out what SS tooth kit size to buy.
Im thinking a 16T on the rear and 36T on the front. Opinions?
Reasonable level of fitness but dont to sit on a train sweating like a ##### .
Whatever you feel comfortable with - i've got 36:14 on my commuter (for a slightly hillier, slightly longer commute than the one you describe), but then I can get changed etc at work. 36:16 would be ok I think, you'll spin along sedately - no great speed, and then also no 'the sweaty bloke everyone avoids' on the train either.
ride the same route on another bike in avariety of gears, find the front/rear gearing that suits transfer that to gear inches and then source cogs to match?
I do 40 X 16 on a short commute with a few interesting hills,(Bristol) fine...
