Yep - my mother was doing it in the 1940s. She never, ever, went off road though because the Americans hadn't invented that yet.

A shiny new shilling for the bright fellow to find that exact location on Streetview*

*No doubt now either Tarmacadam’d, hidden by a coniferous plantation or both.

That exact spot is, indeed, now hidden by trees, but there's a lovely viewpoint just a bit further up the hill.

Actually, it might be that exact spot, just a different focal length

I've got pictures of my mum, also dad and grandfather doing various back road excursions in I assume the 40s and 50s. If I could master hosting pics I'd put them up as would be good to see.

Looks further away, look at the smaller headland on the left hand shore. I reckon they're somewhere near the corner of that plantation.

Yeah, that was my first thought but the bend in the road was leading me back to the viewpoint.

You can see the woodland on the north side of the estuary is the same shape.

Anyway, it's a great spot. I used to stop there when I was driving folk north as they'd all want to take photos.

Nice find! Then and now is like a Banksy painting of the old postcard!
