i can't make my mind up..
i commute singlespeed but, the flexibility of going geared for certain riding holidays would be useful..
I should add that currently i use a cracked GT zaskar with a tensioner which works just fine.
As you may have already guessed i'm gonna get a gas pipe inbred.
I need someone decisive to tell me i need one or the other.
Just buy the vertical drop out frame then you've got best of all worlds - especially if you are happy with running a tensioner
go for a vertical dropout frame with an ebb!
My 456 SS with a tensioner was faultless running 36:18. Just a bit of slack in the chain taken out nicely with the tensioner.
On my 29er though, running 36:20 didnt work very well. The only device that I got to be reliable (I no slip inder big loads) was a rear mech which looked a bit gash. I wish I had gone for a Horizontal dropout frame. Perhaps the original alfine (derailler type ) tensioner would have been ok?
I think the biggest difference is the geometry. Some prefer the geometry of the horizontal dropout type track style frame, especially with straight forks, others prefer the more spacious geometry of the road frame.
Alfine hub solves all the problems.
