I have just been through all this with much deliberation, research and asking i went for 32 up front with an 18 at the back but also got a 16 sprocket just in case,

Does that help ?

It depends where you are riding really ?

If you pop over to Charliethebikemonger.co.uk you can get an A2Z kit with a 16 and 18 tooth sprocket, my plan is to see what suits and swap the sprocket to a surly one which look a bit more robust

By the way Charlie helped me loads with getting the right chainring sorted, well worth visiting and buying stuff off IMHO, his service was superb.

I have a rather nice spare stainless steel (ie should last for ages) 32 tooth chainring from On-One if you want to make me an offer. Never been used, I got as far as bolting it onto my Soul before unbolting and deciding to go geared.
