I got a Gussett single speed kit for my lads bike and fitted it today, it came without instructions but a picture shows it fitted like this with the chain passing above the roller.

That didn't work for me as there wansn't enough adjustment so I fitted it with the chain passing below the roller like this

Will the boys bike explode or is the roller position a product of the front ring size, seems obvious am I over thinking this?

It should be fine, but if your boy is very strong on the pedals, there is a possibility it could skip over the rear cog ... That happened to me a couple of times. Why is it that it can't co over the top of e roller ? Chain not long enough ?
