Hilly commute in Sheffield with an 8 speed 11-34 cassette. Currently have a 42t which is too big for my 🕷 legs! Thinking a 36 or 38 would be better than
Any consensus?
I used a 36 in similar circumstances - My Missus a 34 thats for hilly Edinburgh.
I have 39t chainring and an 11-32 cassette but with 26" wheels...
A mate has 36t with alfine 11, it’s (slightly) too high when loaded, or if it’s really hilly.
I have a 36 and I'm just over the hill in Chapel-en-le-Frith. Spins out on downhills but is manageable.
So 36 on a 700c is a goer?
I tell a lie, just checked and mine is a 38t
I found the 34T https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CROOTHTH/on-one-ringmaster-chainring was fine for me with an 11-30 cassette on the local ~5-14% inclines, it was only when I found the secret "wall" of Midanbury https://www.strava.com/segments/19974352 that hits ~20% that I came unstuck when trying to regularly do a few reps of it... Dead knees and consequent reversion to 24/38 up front.
Mine was on 26" wheels - but I like to spin. Depends a lot on how you like to ride.
I'd go for a 36 and just freewheel more often. You need a narrow wide chainring or a chain guide as well, using a ring made to shift will likely drop the chain off quite often
36 (*11/32) is good for me 99.9% of the time (in Sheffield too). I do have a 24t granny ring, but it's normally used for child-dragging duties.
