[Closed] Single or dual ply tyre?

[#3342583]

About to buy a super tacky swampthing to go with the MudX on the back. Definitely sorted for the softer grippier rubber, but there seem to be dual and single ply options. Given that:

1. I am softcore mincer and don't do gnar, and
2. single ply are very cheap (about £22 delivered...)

am intending to get single ply. Am I signing up for a puncture laden pinch flatted winter of hell? Or a super light weight but magically grippy bermfest?

Thanks in advance, especially for the non sarcastic replies (if there are any).

Gracias.

Single ply probably. Duel ply super tackys are downhill tyres and are hard work for anything else.

I would be cautious with any of the super tacky tyres from maxxis as they are very draggy. The dual compound versions weigh loads avoid them unless your downhilling.
The swamp thing is pretty much a mud specific tyre it wil be hard going in most conditions.
The minion front is good but wont clear mud that well, but a much better all rounder.

Swampys aren't that slow, not noticeably slower than high rollers.

What tyres do you have now and do you often pinch them?

Is tubeless an option for you? I've just converted with singe ply swampthings, i've purposefully been giving them hell, ramming into all the jagged rocks at speed i can find (not too hard at wharncliffe or the peaks) and have had zero problems so far.

Thanks all. Not running tubeless but deanfbm's experience is reassuring enough to give single ply it a try. Here's to a grippy winter!
