I know I need shorter bolts to run my existing middle ring on it's own but are the single specific rings any thicker? (hope/ethirtenn fer instance?)

Not that much thicker - you still need single ring bolts.

get some washers if your stuck from a local iron mongers.

Ta Shep that's what I've done for now with me old middle ring - was wondering whether to buy shorter bolts now or whether next months slightly more bling chainring purchase would negate the need for them. Bolts ordered now cheers.
