I’ve got some Marzocchi MX comp ETAs on my Dekerf, and they’re a bit twangy (at standstill with the front brake on, weight on the pedals > loads of deflection, very noticeable fluttery twanginess over stuttery bumps). So I want better ones. They will be shiny, make me ride faster and be a happier person in all aspects of my life.

The MXs were an upgrade over some Z2 flys in 2004 ish. I thought forks had had 4-5 years to improve, so even low end ones wouId be loads better. I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be.

So I’ve been thinking about Maxle Rebas, just to cut the chase and get big time stiffy-stiff. I don’t want to spend a wedge on forks and think “these aren’t much better either”. Or will the SIDs be plenty stiff? - half a pound lighter is not to be sniffed at. 100mm is the max I’d want with the frame, too.

Reviews on the SIDs on mtbr aren’t much help: some people reckon they’re dead stiff, some people reckon they’re really twangy. Much like the reviews for the MX comps!

I’m 65-70 kgs in the nudd. Riding mainly xc, to the ruffty-tuffty end of the trail centre spectrum, with some occasional chicky messin’. One bike for the lot

Any hints, tips, facts and opinions from fork afficianados would be gratefully received, specially if you’ve tried both.

Cheers!

Ed

I'd get the Rebas. Ive never owned SIDs but they always seem too compromised to get them as light as possible. I think the Rebas will give a better suspension action and are probably stiffer too. None of this is based in actual fact though so it is of limited use! Going to anything with a bolt through will be a huge improvement in stiffness.

I went from 05 reba to 09 sid and all I noticed was better damping and a big weight drop, just as stiff as the reba

would be lovely on a dekerf

if you want stiff and super smooth, get the Reba Maxle you'll not regret it for the riding you describe. SIDs are great for a light or smooth racer and prob stiffer than many older trail forks, but Reba Maxles are something else on rough corners, my fave current 120mm fork without a doubt.

Second James, except my Reba Team maxle is my favourite fork of any length!

Brilliant performance, stiff as I'll ever need and surprisingly light.

Cheers all, I may be back to the maxle rebas. and a new front wheel, and a disc brake.

And wondering whether I'd get better use out of the money by spending the same amount of money on a road bike!
