[#6144607]

Feeling rough with a fever today, so need some cheering up (especially as I have my youngest with me so am being subjected to multiple episodes of 'In the night garden' 😯

Have just decided to convert this (my only mtb) to singlespeed, so would love to see some more please!

You have to pick the size for the image you want the url for. there's a drop down chooser.

SS and rigid makes complete sense. Loving the recent move to SS followed by SS rigid. The latter was by far the most fun overall ride. Do it! 😀

Thanks nedrapier!

@qwerty - I can't tell you how much that doesn't appeal right now! (However, I've learnt too many times before, never say never!)

Just back from a ride on my rigid SS around the Hope Valley, low tech is the future!

After X amount of year playing the arms race & watching many an industry standard come and go & reading that my £600 suspension forks need a service every 10hrs of use - it gives me great pleasure to say bollox to trying to keep up and, yes embrace the nu skool low tech of what got me into this mess in the first place. Bring on the cycle revolution....

The change from full sus to hardtail was a noticeable one in terms of comfort and speed for the riding I tend to do but I was pleasantly surprised that the change from hardtail to rigid was far less noticeable. I wouldn'd say rigid was massively less comfortable than a hartail which kind of makes sense when you think that your arms are the best suspension you have really (daft as it sounds!) I want my SS to be the bike I give a quick spray with a hose at the end of a ride (if that!) then just pick up and ride the next time the mood takes me. No sus fork can be ridden through the grinding muddy paste that is the UK without a reasonable amount of attention. SS is about simplifying things IMO so rigid just makes so much sense

I can definitely see your logic and do love the simplicity of singlespeeds, but I'm just not convinced it'll be as much fun (or forgiving when I get it wrong!). I'm also aware that a lot of peeps end up with huge front tires and being a v lightweight rider (45kg) I'm not convinced that the increase in rotating weight wouldn't mitigate the weight saving in fork.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like to give it a try (you guys have certainly got me intrigued!) but I don't have a spare rigid fork to try out & aren't convinced enough by the idea to spend proper money on it. I do enjoy the ride of my 100m HT more than my old Orange Five on my local trails (hence the permanent change) so like I say, never say never! 😉

Using an alfine tensioner to allow for chain length variations due to suspension.

DMR Bolt - has swop-outs and a BB pivot, so easy to SS.

Surly Krampus - in hooligan mode, though currently it's got it's rigid forks back on.

MountainMonkey - I've been wondering the same wonders about suss v rigid v rigid fat. Currently loving the current set up, as above, but:http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fat-front-v-normal-rigid-v-suss-fork

Worth a try at some point maybe.

Less of a conversion, more of a 2nd hand/parts bin build, converted triple up front with dmr tensioned rear, 32 x 17, farm hack bike, still want some unicrown forks for it, probably cromotos.

These two are conversions -

WTB Phoenix

[img] [/img]

Klein Mantra

[img] [/img]

The Mantra is a URT design so actually works pretty well as a SS.

Presumably by "conversion" you mean taking the mechs off and using a tensioner?

The frame is a Canfield Yelli Screamy.

I tried rigid and didn't get on with it, too shaky-bouty for me. (Maybe I needed a bigger tyre but to mount one safely I'd also need wider rims).

But I also found that, actually, a sus fork works quite well with SS. When up and powering on a bumpy surface climb, the sus actually helps keep forward momentum by adsorbing the trailcrap bumps, there's much less lifting or getting hung up.

I've also moved on from thinking of a 'single speed' as a particular class of bike. I just see my Yelli as an XC/trail bike I love to ride, that happens to have the number of gears on that I need.

The Yelli's slack front end gives it a very planted feel, it climbs well stood up, better than sitting and spinning IMO.

This set up is my go-to bike for local riding in Surrey Hills, I switch it to 1x10 for trail centre weekends in Wales etc.

Ha, apologies 😳 . Looks like rust in the pic - still reckon it'd be cool though 😆 In fact, I want one - may just have to buy a little HJ and leave it out in the rain.
