Wow I like that blue!

Is this your only bike?

What size is it and how tall are you?

renton I think you will be really pleased with your choice of bike once you ride it. I have a neon orange alpine five but damn the blue is sweet. what colour have you gone for?

It's the black gold version but has white alpine5 stickers. Going to change back I think.

Although over winter I've been riding a rigid alfine Lurcher and haven't yet swapped back...
That's more a function of the time I've had to ride though!

Oh and it's now fitted with a pair of knuckleball bars, a set of flows on pro2s and I have at last cut the steerer!

I love it Renton. Very capable bike despite it having "only" 110 mm at the rear (I have 130 Revs on the front) It's a large and I'm 6'1". I do have a rigid 29er as well for local stuff (and a road bike) but this is my main mtb for 90% of what I do.

POSTED 11 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

Bugger, too slow.

odd that the final decision was to go for a bigger sort of bike than the Trance, and also a single pivot after the 5-spot and Trance

Whats the problem with an Orange 5?

Nothing, its the rider that's the issue here. Remember that you were going to try loads out before buying? Have you test ridden this one or are you going on numbers again?

P.S. I own a Five, I would've definitely done my homework on them before buying unless you know you'll get on with one

Indeedy Single pivots are a very different feel.. Orange will send out a demo bike to your LBS for you to demo for £50, which is normally refunded by the shop if you buy from them....
Made the final decision for me on a Segment, great bike, but not what I 'wanted', saved me a load of money (well maybe not as I now have an more expensive frame on order!).

PS: Come on... more pictures of 29-5's, segments and gyro's! Bored of only ever seeing 5's!

Nice one Renton. I take it you bought it second hand, so if you don't like it you can always move it on without taking too much of a hit. Just think of it as an extended (proper) test ride. One where you can take your time to get it set up properly, swap bits out to suit etc. If nothing else you should get a better idea of what sort of bike you want and hopefully have some fun on the way. Keep us posted 🙂

I was after something with a higher front end like my five spot and the 5 29 fits that bill.

This one ive bought is really a nice bike with fox 34's and kashima shock etc.

That's understandable.

You've also gone from a bike with neutral pedaling, neutral braking and a refined leverage curve, to one with absolutely none of that. If you think you had issues with the Trance's shock before and after you had it tuned, just wait till you try the Orange!

It might work for you, it might not - just think you're mental to not do any of the stuff you said you were going to before buying again.

Legend.... Ive been on the net almost constantly since I sold the Trance looking at stuff.

For my budget you cant buy anything new with a spec that comes even remotely close to what you can get secondhand or from zee germans etc.

To be honest I wasnt that impressed by the suspension on the Trance apart from its climbing ability.

Ive been doing lots of reading about the orange and single pivots, I understand it may bob a bit more than my previous bikes but Im willing to give it a go.

Its all part of the fun .... no ???

Don't be put off by the negative comments, it seems as though some people have a chip on their shoulder where Orange are concerned. You have got an absolutely cracking bike and I would be very surprised if you don't love the way it rides. It gets tedious reading the constant Orange out downs. Single pivot aint fancy but it works and it works well.

Ignore the haters, the 5 29 is ace as I'm sure you will find out. Be interested to see what you think.

As much as people bang on about multi pivot this, linear that, VPP etc I much prefer the ride on my 5 29 to that of the Santa Cruz Tallboy I tried. Horses for courses but I can't say I notice much of what people insist are bad about single pivot bikes.

Where are the negatives comments?
SP are hugely different feel to anything else, I love them.. but I hardly expect everyone else to love them too. Hence my comment about trying to demo one 1st (thought he might be buy from a shop, which could delay the order for a demo) I really don't get on with horst link bikes, but lots of other ppl do.. horse for courses indeed.
(my decision not to buy a segment was not due to the SP feel)

Hope you get on with it Renton, get some pictures up

I really do hope that I get on with it. As nice as it is swapping bikes all the time Im getting a bit bored of it now and just want to ride !!

I had a go on a marin single pivot way back in 2001 and it was horrendous, however this was before propedal etc adn i think the shock had aleak !!

z1ppy, I assume I'm the one being negative/hating, but obviously they haven't read the part where I mention that I ride a Five.

Renton, my 1st full susser was a Marin SP and yes they bounced, but pro pedal shock has tamed them pretty damned well (two marin SP frames, a Superlight and Prophet mean I've earned my SP stripes).

Legend, how very dare you make disparaging comments and dare to own one! 😉

Ive recently had a Giant trance, a Patriot 66, which then got compiled onto a Giant reign do it all bike.
Always "knew" i should be riding a 29er at 6ft 4", but always considered the wagon wheels to be the preserve of XC bikes (basically fat CX bikes)
Five29 is the first bike ive seen i would consider a proper allrounder. I wanted something that wont be out of its depths in the alps, but is ride-able in the UK.

First ride at the weekend on my new 21" five29, and i can confirm its rad! Nice not having a 6" drop from saddle to handlebars, i can descend loads better. The suspension rides exactly like the patriot did: No where near as well/plushly/bottomless as the fantastic Maestro on the giants, but it still does what it is supposed to do, and im fed up of looking after masses of bearings.

What are the STWmassive using for picture storage these days? i cant link off facebork anymore...

oh rents 😐

i thought you were going to test ride stuff, you'd made a list and were going to ride each til you found what you wanted?

not having a go, just ride the 5 as it comes without buying new bars/forks etc til you know if you like it before upgrading stuff 🙂

i just lost £150 on a set of forks due to 'upgrading' so just ride it a while first please 8)
