For the question about using them as replacements for MTB's then yes, all the time. I rarely ride my mountain bike nowadays, it's just too slow getting to and from the trails. Ride the CX bike fast there, experience huge amounts of pain riding round the same trails I normally would, ride back really fast (perhaps grimacing a little bit).

WOOOAH! Are you in my woods there? I hope not!

I really fancy one for the South Downs, do the tyres get mashed by flints? Also, I'd quite like to run a flat bar, would I die?

Doubles up as my road bikes, I'd love a disc setup in the future like some of the above!

1/. yes in my experience - not on the south downs but regular riding on gravel tracks cuts up the side walls - some tyres are possibly worse than others - but worth regular checks

2/. no but that would be a hybrid and you'd need to get some panniers

Seat tube angle looks relaxed on that Shand, lovely colourway though!

Edit, maybe not on seconds thoughts, might be just the frame size. Either way its nice

Only pic I have but absolutely love it. Two sets of wheels. One for riding into work and the other for off road nighttime winter duties ๐Ÿ™‚

Soma, what would that Ibis in that build come in at price wise?

Not that I've got any money, but I can dream.

On a more affordable level, I've been drooling over this for a while.

I've just finished building a Croix de Fer. I'm intending to try a little gentle off road with it soon - what tyres do the experts recommend for riding to the trails, mincing round and riding back home again?

Nope - but for road use I have replaced the Racing Ralphs with a a set of Conti GP 4 Season tyres, which seem good - fairly slick with light tread and tough enough for the rough back roads round this way. Plus they come in 28mm which is the smallest recommended tyre width for the 19mm Mavic CrossRide rims. Rec pressure for them is 95psi (max 115psi).

GrahamS, what bike did you go for in the end? I can't remember if you ever said? Was it the Rose in the end? If so, hows it treating you?

Aye, I got the Rose in the end. See fourth post on this very thread ๐Ÿ˜€

Bit of hassle with wrong parts fitted when it was first delivered, but all sorted now.
Used it commuting last week till I got used to the position then took it out for its maiden road ride on Sunday (50 miles - not far for some but furthest I've been in one day).

Really liking it. The SRAM gears feel good and the brakes are effective. Obviously a bit if a harsh ride coming from a steel hardtail with big tyres, but not unreasonably so.

Got a Columbus Mud X to build up this year. Hoping for it to be a little lighter than the 11.5kg Tricross...

Lovely Van Dessel up there.

My new Chinese carbon frame is great

Except for this which is less good though I'm fairly sure it's a filler crack rather than anything structural.
