Morning hive mind...
I'm going to Devizes for work next week and will have some time to ride on Wed afternoon - anyone have any good routes or suggestions? I've not been there before!
What bike you taking?
From Devizes, you can follow the canal path West all the way to Bath, then go through the simply epic tunnels and end up in Bristol. This would be perfect for a 'gravel' bike due to the canal path. Few cafes enroute etc.
If you're on a road bike, heading south east towards salisbury is lovely. Really nice quiet roads and pretty pub stops.
If you're on a MTB, then the ridgeway isn't far away to the north which would be nice.
Thanks @apedoctor for the options. I was thinking mtb, which is either Spesh Epic xc bike or a Devinci Troy trail bike, so the Epic could do the gravel ride you mention, but the Ridgeway sounds more appealing!
I do also have a road bike, but that gets used mainly for commuting and I rarely consider it for trips!!
Imber perimeter?

If you decide on Bath / Bristol the canal path takes you through Bradford on Avon, which is a great little spot
Ooh, Imber perimeter looks interesting, cheers…
I used to ride from Devises up to the White Horse then tracks down to Rowde. From here small roads to Urchfont. Up Pear Tree Hill onto Imber track, go east to Netheravon and loop back on the byways.Drop down to Chirton pickup NCN 4 into Devises
As said above loads around there can head up Roundway hill just outside Devizes and use Byways to Avebury and into west wood by Marlborough or Savernake forest plus ridgeway XC mtb fine trail bike bit over top lovely area though.
Not far from the stuff at Erlestoke, which has a few trails between the prison and the imber perimeter path for the plain.
i live in devizes and like going up to roundway hill then past golf club onto trail to cherhill then head to avebury, join the ridgeway to barbury castle then back down towards marlbrough via downs.then head back to avebury via gallops and then return the way you came.
nearly all of it offroad and lovely views (about 37 miles in total).
salisbury plain is good also but i nearly always do the same route (as the plains are almost always closed due to mod).
canal to bath/bristol cycleway is nice too.
Imber range path is nice, ivevridden it alot over the years it will take you to the bits at erlestoke too.
It will also take you near to windhill bike park which is worth the short drive from devises all on its own, I think it's £5 for a day pass and a laugh hoot riot.
Devises is also on NCN Route 4 which will take you to reading, Kingston and London on one direction.
Beautiful Bradford on Avon, Bath, bristol and onto Wales in the other.
Not exactly mountain biking but largely off road and great for a day out with bikes, beautiful scenery and plenty to eat and drink.
What remedyflyer and racefaceec90 said about Roundway would be your best bet in my opinion. (I'm Melksham based).
Don't bother with Imber, it's pretty dull and windswept.
I could introduce you to Louise...
Not great for mtb round there, but you've probably worked that out by now.
Thanks all for the suggestions! It looks like I’ll be going there from time to time so I’ll end up trying out a lot of the options. Didn’t realise Windhill is nearby, although that might not work as a ride at the end of a work day!
So I did the Imber perimeter ride this afternoon- really enjoyed it, a cracking way to spend 2.5 hours, although the wind was fun!! Not the most exciting from a trails point of view, but it was very pleasant and the views were stunning. Thanks for the recommendations, as ever this place is a wealth of useful knowledge!!
