[Closed] Should I send it back? Cassette issue

[#3667792]

Having just replaced my cassette I have noticed that it doesn't run true. i've check the freehub for play (though the old cassette ran perfectly true anyway) and it's definitely the casette that's either bent or just out of kilter.

Took the bike for a quick run up the drive and down again and though it doesn't affect the indexing i'm worried it might get worse.

That said, sending things back to CRC is a bit of a pain!

What would you do?

The whole cassette is bent?

I'm doing that 'are you really sure' face while typing...

no, not the whole cassette, just the smaller ones. I thought it might have been the separate rings not seating right but they were.

I'm struggling to visualise the problem; the smaller sprockets are not seating on the freehub properly?

This.

Take it all off, clean and start again.

if I look down on the cassette on the wheel and spin the wheel the smaller 3 or 4 sprockets seem to have a definite wobble (only two of these are separate sprockets).

Whats the brand of cassette and hub?
Is there a little play in the cassette - if so you may be missing a thin spacer that goes on before the cassette!

I've seen freehubs wobble in the past; doesn't mean they are dying, just a feature of their construction. The wobbling is most obvious in the smaller sprockets because they are farther out from the hub. I suspect it's a bit of a wobble in the freehub which is being exaggerated by the cassette.

In short; nothing to worry about.

What cassette is it?

I've had similar issues with cheaper Shimano ones. Never seemed to affect shifting though.

SRAM PG950 and Hope XC hub

Nah, cassette is on tight.

In short; nothing to worry about.

Thanks, i'll have another look tomorrow and take for a proper ride to check it out and report back with findings.

thanks

When you say on tight, is there any lateral play when the lock ring is done up?

Stupid Q, but is your wheel in straight?

Sending stuff back to CRC is a doddle - presuming you don't live in the boonies.
There should be a form with your order which you fill in & then take along with your goods in the original box to a collection point, details of which are on the form. And it's fee!

hi guys realised in the cold light of day that the cassette is fine and the apparent wobbling was the effect of the different shapes on the individual sprockets to aid smooth shifting!

LOL!

at least I do all my own repairs rather than taking it to a shop (usually Halfords) only to come on here to complain about shoddy workmanship/customer service/price (delete appropriate).
