As the title says really, just finished building up my Cove Stiffee and the rims are white Syncros DP25's on black pro 2's on Maxxis High Rollers 2.35 dual ply 60aa tyres, went for the harder compound for faster rolling and better wear rate.
They look awesome very strong and very light, I built the bike to be ridden primarily on XC routes, singletrack, and technical decents I mainly ride Welsh trail centres but never do freeride or big jumps or drops.
Although i'm not pushing the frame anywhere near its true potential I just wanted a good strong frame that will last me for years so I chose the Stiffee.
Problem is now the wheels are on the bike the rims look kind of well...... narrowish? my last bike was a Santa Cruz Bullit with EX729's which were stupidly wide!
Is this a case of comparing the EX729's to the Syncros which I suppose i'm doing and am I worrying about nothing and should I stick with the Syncros? and are they up to the job of hard core hardtail riding and do they suit the frame? (not freeriding)
I went for the DP25's as I wanted the bike to be able to do anything but still be strong and lightish as it needs to be able to be ridden uphill and for 3-6 hours at rides like the mbr, nant y arian continental.
Any advice would be great or anyone using Syncros DP25's and on what bike and for what riding would be brill 🙂
i am/was/have run mavic em321 and ex321,s both the same width, one just a bit tougher.
More importantly both about the same width as the DP25's. I've run 2.1, 2.35 and 2.4 maxxis tires on them with no problems. Unless your caseing 20ft gaps (the ammerican definition of all mountain, not the MBR towpath/trail center one) then they'll be fine.
The quality of the wheel build will have a big effect on the stength of the wheels, keep an eye on the tension for the first few weeks and maybe add 1/4 turn to each spoke, remove any wind up and re-true (repeat the last 2 a few times to make sure its perfect) if you suspect there's anything amiss with the build quality.
cheers mate, so you think the rims are plenty tough enough? they cost me a fortune! and I went on the fact that on all reviews not one person has a negative comment about them just 5/5 everywhere 🙂
I've got DP25s on my 08 Marin Wolf Ridge which is setup for freeride / DH.

I would say I push them, I have dented them but they've stayed true and they are certainly strong (apart from denting). Have stood up to cwmcarn DH, Megavalanche and the new tracks at Gawton as well as the Clic 24 enduro, cwmcarn and Afan XC loops.
Good rims - for the strength / weight and I wouldn't worry about width issues as there aren't any. If you are riding and not pushing it to the limits then you don't need to change. If you are flat spotting, denting consently or badly buckling them then yeah maybe you need harder wheels.
Keep'em and save the £££
Jackass your a flippin star mate 🙂
What size tyres are they in the picture? are they 2.35 bluegroove up front with a nevegal 2.35 rear?
Lastly (sorry!) do the rims plump out your tyres ok?
Your concerns appear to mostly be based on how the rims look.
How do they affect the ride?
cynic-al yeah think your slightly right mate, its because my last rims (EX729's were mahooooosive! so i'm rightly so marginly concerned 🙂
But jackass has more than cheered me up and I shall be keeping them on now 🙂
Rims plump out the tyres fine, I have 2.35 Nevegals front and rear and they fill the frame space nicely, heres a 'front on' pic on the Lyrics

[/img] and they certainly aren't narrow!!
I have recently swapped to some 2.35 Minions and they are the same and fitted great.
Perfect! well happy you posted those pics mate 🙂
Thanks
I run Syncros DS28s and they're awesome. Not heavy but take a total beating.
