[#465455]

Using an 10 year old 90mm stem on my turner 5spot the bike is probably slightly to small for me was thinking of getting some new wider bars and later upgrading the stem. The general thinking seems to be shorter stems are the better so was going to try a 70mm But... was going to get a thompson elite x4 stem in the future but its 31.8 and my current stem is 25.4 so do i
A buy 31.8 stem 70mm and bar
B buy 25.4 bar and stick with my stem
C none of the above
D dont care

yes - went from a 100mm stem down to a 60 a couple of weeks ago. climbing is a tiny bit trickier when it gets super steep, meaning you have to get out of the saddle a little sooner. but more than made up for confidence downhll, and faster more direct steering on singletrack. do it!

likewise just swapped 90mm for 70mm +20deg rise

steers nicely/ better descending/ front wheel feels a bit lighter on climbs but ss so im out of the saddle anyway

You can get a "normal" (not a X4) Thomson Elite stem in 70mm length for 25.4mm bars. Shorter stems are better, IMHO but you say the bike's too small, wouldn't putting a shorter stem on be making it even smaller?

Thats my only concern the bars would be slightly lower rise so would counter act the shorter stem slightly thing is how do i really now the bike is too small its more upright than my old 1998 rocky mountain element but its a different type of bike , if im honest i like the set up as its is and the stearing feels fine only thing is i would like it to be easier to get the front end up . £60-70 is a lot to spend to try out though might get a 2nd cheap stem to try first.

Ask around and borrow one for a try, where are you?

Or i have a Truvativ XR 75mm on both bikes and they are oversized and cheap as chips, and don't exactly weigh a lot either..
