I've just stuck one on = chainstuck hell!
Seems to be sticking on something too dark to be certain what at the moment. Could be the bolts as they don't seem as protected as the pucker XT rings.
I was told by LBS that it was a straight swap?
Should be. Sure it's on right? The shifting ramps etc need to be in the right place. Some deore rings need wee bits filed off the tangs to fit right too.
As Northwind OR, if you just replaced the middle chain ring and nothing else, sometimes trying to mix old and new drive chain stuff causes problems. It often doesn't work if you fit new chain rings with a well worn chain. Or, Is it also a new chain?. If the chain is well worn, you probably will need to replace it and then the cassette might start skipping aswell, because that has been worn unevenly by the old well worn chain, So new cassette.
Anyways, I have used cheap Deore middle rings on XT cranks for years, so mixing deore and XT def. isn't the problem.
:::passes him a new chain...
...waits over the road with cassette in hand::
The chain is almost new, shows no sign of wear with my chain checker thingy. It's in the right place with the nobbles lined up.
I'll check tomorrow in the light to see if I can see what's catching.
there are some incompatabilities. although the bcd is the same the diameter of the step on the flanges that the chainring butts up against is different. I have run into this issue. I had to grind a bit off the chainring
hmm...I always use a cheap Deore middle ring on my XT HTII, never had any incompatability issues, even when using a slighly worn chain, strange. I always use SRAM chains, but don't imagine that makes a dif..
Recently had an issue with an XT middle ring not fitting, the flanges were too long and the bolt holes didn't line up, cheap deore middle ring dropped straight on, are the newer Xt rings different? was a black one, all previous have been silver.
the deore ring wont work on an xt 770 model chainset without filing it in places. it will work with previous models but not the 770
Hmm worked on my XT 770 without filing, I changed from a triple to double + bash set-up and swapped to a Deore steel 36 'middle' ring and it worked fine. It does seem to grab the chain a bit more than the XT one it replaced though but hasn't caused any chain suck yet.

Why is that though?
There is a "new" deore out but I couldn't find anyone with those rings.
Sorry cancel that my problem was I couldn't fit 770 rings to my older xt cranks sorry about that. Doh
