What's the best way? I'm struggling to undo the link. Can you press out a pin and press it back in again? Add another link? I just want to put a smaller chain ring on, so I'm guessing 1 link will be ok.

you need some chain link pliers, using these you can undo the quick connector then take a link out and refit.

Another tool!? I was rather hoping I'd be able to do it without. Probably cheaper to buy a new chain?

You can use mole grips to undo them easily.

How? By holding the link diagonally in the jaws?

You need this tool -ย  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/x-tools-pro-master-link-pliers/rp-prod55925

Or you can put wire in either side of the link and use pliers to squeeze it together, just be careful tho as it is painful if it slips and you nearly take the top of your finger off.......

No,

don't by a remove only tool. Buy one like the Park one:ย  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/park-tool-master-link-pliers-mlp1-2/rp-prod109888

This will remove and fit them. I know you can simply put some tension on the chain to pull them tight but the tool is so much nicer to use.

There is also a BBB one that does the same as the Park. But it's not Park.

Is a 12 speed that different to a 10? My recent comedy of errors fitting a new one meant I had to cut and re-join 3 times. Just pushed out a pin then pushed it back in. Never even tried to undo the joiner link (this time), blood blisters from pliers are not fun.

Also, one link 🤔

Chain link pliers are a must have in the tool box, makes life really simple.

So just do that, over the life of the 12sp it will be cheaper then buying new chains

Buy the tool. If you are shortening this chain then you'll have more to do in the future.

I mean if you really don't want to buy the tool I've got quick links apart with normal pliers before. Pain in the arse - I keep meaning to buy the proper tool myself

<span style="color: #444444; background-color: #eeeeee;">Can you press out a pin and press it back in again?ย </span>

<span style="color: #444444; background-color: #eeeeee;">ย Just pushed out a pin then pushed it back in.</span>

Avoid doing this unless you have a cast iron crotch. Or padding on the top tube.

The ends of the pins are mushroomed or peined over to ensure a tight fit into the side plates. Pushing in and out will make the previous extremely tight fit a bit looser, which might result in a snapped chain.

Anything from 8 upwards will suffer from this.
