Can I use the same procedure as Shimano ones? (Pump pistons in, cut and reattach hoses, push pistons back into place, avoid a bleed)
And are these the right bits? (the insert looks a bit mental versus Shimano)

I've just fitted and shortened a set with braided hoses.
The insert and olive (split) are both re-usable.
The only difficult bit was getting the exposed metal braiding through the olive after stripping back the outer sheath.
I lost a bit of fluid on one end so needed to bleed it but the other brake was rock solid before bleeding (which I did anyway just to be sure)
Reusable? That's handy. I've got standard hoses, so should be a bit simpler then
What do you use to shorten braided hoses??
I'd forget about trying to avoid a bleed. Best to do it after a job like this.
I used some normal cable cutters to cut my braided hoses when I shortened mine. You have to make sure you get the whole hose in the cut though. They're quite chunky so it's easy to not quite cut through the whole cable, then it's very difficult to tidy it up with a second cut. You can get a proper tool for cutting hydraulic hoses.
I would buy a replacement olive, you can get them off and put them back on again. But they also break easily when you open then up. You don't want it to break on you and be stuck with everything in bits. They can also leak of it's not a tight fit.
