Hi
I've become short sighted and now need glasses to ride in as my line choices are getting very individual
I'm not wanting contacts as I'd be worried about getting shite in behind the lens.
So I'm looking for glasses that won't explode n are suitable for riding in and are not too expensive as they'll probably get scratched.
Thanks
Long time glasses and contact wearer here (also short sighted)
No glasses will explode, lenses are made of plastic and frames are metal or plastic
There are various options when it comes to glasses, you can just get some cheapo ones from Specsavers or somewhere similar for riding in for around £10 or you can spend out and get something like Oakley's with all the coatings like scratch resistant, anti glare & transition lenses like i do, or find something in between
For riding i would go with strong plastic framed glasses so if you do have an off there less chance of them becoming damaged, also make sure they are a snug fit as you don't want them moving around or falling off when riding
If you wear a full face then watch out for fitment as the arms can dig in the side of your head and for me it feels like my eyes are rattling around in my head for some reason so i wear contacts with goggles or sunglasses
There also cycling specific prescription sun glasses out there, do a quick Goggle search and read some reviews
Here's my Glasses

Contacts. Been using them and MTB-ing since 1990. Can think of nothing else than going back to geggs for riding.
Even cheap safety glasses keep the crap out well these days.
I waited for a good few years of glasses wearing before I tried contacts and it is far and away the better solution for me.
Glasses often fogged up or got covered in water droplets and mud rendering them useless whereas contacts don’t.
I just use my every day glasses (I always keep two pairs) which are rimless with plastic lenses*, IME I've found they work better than glasses with rim as they don't steam up easily. Your never going to get me to wear contacts, but no doubt they are probably the best option
Contacts.
And put Mudhuggers on at the front to stop mud getting flung up.
Been using them for a years and not had a problem getting shite in behind the lens.
I wear safety glasses most of the time on the bike but happily take them off when it's raining or foggy.
Another for contact lenses, and have needed glasses for 30+ years. Never has a problem with anything getting behind the lens with either wearing or not wearing any other eye protection. Obviously better with....
With glasses you can usually get a lens anti scratch coating added
I pick glasses with a big nose bridge bit - it digs in less when you get sweaty etc and if you get hit in the face with a tennis ball etc
If you get a pair that will sit normally and low on your nose you can push them down your nose and look over the top when they go fractal in rain
The round the back of the head straps stop them falling off on big impacts and you can hang them round your neck , as opposed to leaving them on the ground and standing on them
Get the sprung hinged arms which bend outwards slightly as they dig into face less when impacted
Didn't need glasses til I turned 50, and I only have a mild prescription but it makes quite a difference when driving or riding. Glasses in the car or watching TV, contacts when cycling or motorcycling. On the mtb I wear cheap riding glasses over the top, with a clear lens unless its sunny, to keep crap out of my eyes.
I’d be worried about getting shite in behind the lens.
I've worn contacts for better part of 30 years, and done all sorts of mountain riding running, kayaking, climbing and camping in all weather, and this has happened precisely zero times ever. In fact is clarty weather like today where it's minging, and I don't need sunnies and glasses will get covered in mud, I normally don't bother at all, and it will be fine
riding in spectacles however is a PITA, they do get muddy, fog up, scratched, knocked around, and if you have a crash and break them what d'you do, carry a spare pair? TBH fair though, that's only ever happened a couple of times to cheap sunnies.
I'll give it 3 months tops before you're asking about contacts 🙂
I use Uvex prescription safety glasses (there are a couple of sporty ones). About £80 if buying yourself (I use an old work pair). Only time I don't get on with them is warm heavy drizzle.
Contacts:
Been using then for the last few years, never had an issue with them at all.
Problem I had with prescription lenses you are limited to the lens tint you choose or you have to have several pairs, with contacts I use glasses that I can swap out the lenses to suit the conditions.
Contacts. With pretty much all glasses you lose your peripheral vision (or it’s so blurry it’s useless).
Picked up some fro m Optilabs a few years ago. Reasonable cheap compared to their competition and nice quality. Much prefer contacts though to have perriferal vision and feel so much safer on fast bits. But then im - 4.5 in each eye.
Cheers guys.
Seen this site
And it's got some options.
Dunno the thought of contacts makes me go all wobbly as I hate stuff in my eyes. Might see a bout a trial though.
Cheers
-4.5 prescription here, and another +1 for contact lenses and decent mudguards.
Used contacts for years after a couple of bad crashes with glasses but I've been using prescription rad8 mud huggers this last year. Amazing. Far better than using contacts in my opinion.
