I am going to a single ring 34t up front. Can I get away with keeping my long gauge rear mech or do I have to change it?

w,

You can keep it until it is scrap.

Shorten your chain accordingly and ride.

Shimano Saint is the only short-cage rear MTB mech excepting SRAMs offerings and is not cheap!
Saint has the unique advantage of tracking a road (up to 28T) or an MTB (over 28T) cassette by switching an adapter round.

No-one seems to offer a system where you can buy and change just the cage.

No need to change the mech.

Think you can get top end SRAM cages as spares?
