I wouldn't skimp on shoes. They are very important to riding. You can get all sorts of injuries due to ill fitting or in appropriate shoes. Got for what is right for your feet/legs rather than what is cheap.

I've tried a lot of shoes, but imho, you can't beat Sidi. I have narrow feet and they fit the best, although I do think they make a wider version as well. I am on my third pair in 10 years.
They are pricey, but are extremely durable. I have the Dragon model that has replaceable sole lugs. My present ones are 3 years old, still very stiff and show little wear---the latching mechanism, while it looks like it might wear out/break has never done so on these or 2 earlier pair I have had. I am on my third set of sole lugs.

Specialized ones for me (sport or comp), tried some dhb but they didn't fit. last 2 pairs I bought of ebay - not used much and half the price

Just got some MT42 for less than 50ukp. Done well in reviews and seem fine.

I'm using Gaerne Lapo's now. Wide (for my wiide feet) & Vibram soles for walking over moors, which I seem to do a lot of. Fairly splash proof too, nice shoes.

I've used Specialized for years, & found them to be really good. I've just treated myself to some Sidi Dominators & as mentioned in the earlier post the best shoes I've had, mind you they are expensive. If price is an issue then go for the Specialized ones.

Spesh Tahoes are ace. Comfy, well made and cheap.

Have had a pair of Lakes for five years or so, lace ups with a velcro fastening cover, bought 'em for less than £50. They are a bit on the heavy side, but are good hard wearing value for money shoes. I used to wear Shimano, but I find them too tight a fit. The Lake shoes are good, would recommend them.

You need to try different types. Spesh ones didn't do it for me. I found Shimano fitted very well and the last few pairs I've had had the carbon sole. Suss out the brand and size and then try to get a deal online,

I tried on some spesh bg comps and various shimano shoes yesterday . I do like the spesh style of checking your feet/footprint on the mat .It highlighted a collapsed arch !

Sidi shoes with spesh insoles for me. I found the spesh shoes awful, and recently found that they have a built in angle to the sole, higher on the inside, which is the opposite to my requirements.

Especially important if using Spd's as you can't move your feet around when uncomfortable, unlike flat pedals.

After years of racy type shoes in summer, I've was converted last year to Shimano MT51's. A bit more trail, but comfy all day long.

Sidis are too narrow for my feet (even the Mega); Spesh feel wrong, I've never tried Lake.
