My rear hub has developed a lot of play and needs some atte tion. How easy is it to service? I had a look at the exploded diagram on the shimano website and all looks pretty straightforward, except I can only find one spanner flat on the NDS so it's not obvious how to undo the cone locknut. Any advice appreciated - idiots guide would be brilliant. Cheers

That's perfect Mister P - thanks!
Turns out to be a very easy job to remove the locknut and cone. Everything looked pristine inside and only needed the cone/locknut nipped up a bit - running like a dream now.
wow. No shimano detractors?
I know - amazing!
Too slow!
Cup and cone - 19th century engineering.
Adjustment procedure
Loosen locknut, tighten cone , find you don't have enough hands (- at least three needed) to tighten locknut. Eventually tighten locknut. Wheel locked. Loosen locknut, loosen cone, tighten locknut. find there is play.
Repeat until bored.
Go buy some modern engineered hubs will proper bearings.
Will that do al?
Nah TJ - it's all moved on!
Cone spanner on the, erm... cone, 5mm allen key in the locknut - piece of piss!
