Finding shimano's standard fit a bit narrow around the ball of my foot, so looking to order the wide version.

Is it the width of the sole/foot bed that is wider or is just a bigger/roomier last on the shoe.

Definitely wider, but find them too short for my size.

M088 wide fit were much narrower than M162 wide fit I had before...best try a few!

I've spent the last 2 months exhausting all shoe options in my local shops, and half of what is available online too.
Eventually I realised that not only did Shimano do wide versions, but the lasts vary significantly across the range.
There is a very useful guide [url= http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/technologies/more_lasts.php ]here[/url] which summarises exactly where the shoes vary in size in the different lasts.

Worth noting that the models on the chart are 2015, many of which are not available yet. I ended up with the [url= http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-xc50n-all-season-mountain-bike-shoes/?sku=5360461136 ]XC50N [/url]which is the volume performance last, and fits me perfectly, but it did take a bit of research to find out which of the older models had which fitting
