About to buy new shoes and flat pedals.Everyone rates 5-10's as the absolute danglers, but at £75 are almost twice as expensive as the Shimano's. I am not doing big jumps etc so am sure the Shimano's will give more than enough grip. So, two questions:

1) Is there real difference apart from grip between 5-10's and Shimano's that would justify the price difference? How do they compare on stiffness?
2) If I go Shimano, should I go MP56 or MP90? Quite like the idea of the customisable stiffness

I really love my 56's.

They are comfy and I love how the laces and open areas are proteced by the fold over cover.

I use Straitline falt pedals and the spikes are tall which dig into the shimano soft soles.

I've never slipped yet.

I was advised by my LBS to buy the shimano 56's even though they sell 5-10s.

Oh and get them in black.

I had the older black shimano ones but with the vibram sole, very grippy and stiff enough, but stretched alot, now need 3 pairs of socks on to use them.

Ive been using Shimano AM40's for a few months now, and despite looking a bit "disco slipper" they are the mutts nuts! Ace grip on long-pinned V12's or DX's and they also have the sole-stiffening insert thingies, though THB they are well stiff without using them. Normally about £50, but im sure ive seen them in various sales for about £40. But Sam Hill don't wear them so you won't be in the cool club.

Nor will you be in the "Owning best shoe for flat pedals club".

I have 5-10s and all I can say is wow, it actually feels more connected than spuds in a weird way.

I have excluded the AM40's from my shortlist as I do not want to look like an extra from Saturday Night Fever, and anyway they are almost as expensive as the 5-10's.

The big issue is 5-10 £75, MP90 £42, MP56 £30. Don't mind spending the extra if there is something really special about the 5-10's that justifies almost twice the price, bearing in mind I don't need ultimate grip

Best Schmest, each to their own, sir. In my comedy clown size 12's the 5-10's are just too wide and clumpy, but the AM40's are slimmer and i tend to scuff against chainstays less. Iv'e used both, and can say i actually prefer a decent set of etnies or waffle soled vans for sheer comfort, but unfortunatley long pins eat the soles of skate shoes real quick. AM40's all the way for me. Im sure iv'e been less than useful in this thread. Apologies,Captain Mainwaring. Im off down the shops now - In some SPD flip flops

5 10s will last years, mine are 3 years and counting, I reckon they'll easilly last another two. Offer more protection. Dont deform or strecth. Are stiffer. Thicker sole means less shock transferred to your feet. Oh and once again they have much more grip which is something you can never have too much of.

Because of the recent good weather I decided to ride wearing skate shoes as opposed to 5 10s which I've worn for years. The difference was night and day. Over rough ground I was actually wincing from the pain in my feet. Landing drops gained an added degree of difficulty/trepidation as I didnt want to injure my feet. Taking off from kickers I actually lifted my feet off the pedals on more than one occasion and to top it all off when I got home my feet cramped up quite badly.

I concluded it was down to my Duffs so the next day for the purposes of objectivity I tried the same thing in a pair of Van Rowleys. Exactly the same result. The moon boots are back on for good.

Once you get used to 5 10s they become like an added piece of armour. Not unlike a helmet or knee pads, you forget you're wearing them and simply get on with it. The only thing you notice is how naked you feel without them.

I believe the hype about 5-10's but with size 11 feet I wont be buying any for fear of tripping over my own feet clad in the ugliest footwear i've ever seen 😉

I'm looking for MP56 in grey

element townsend

like turd fleace stick rearange

and stiff for pedaling. Never had issues with them pulling off the pedals, only led own in snow when the pedals gained a coating of ice, unless 5.10's come with crampons they'd have been equaly useless. Added bonus, i wear them daily as casual trainers, 5.10's would mean spending another £30 on skate shoes anyway.

If you reely need/want C4 rubber, why not buy skate shoes (and get a big choice of styles, sizes etc) then imediately get them re-soled, costs £35, so your still under budget. Just make sure the shoes are the type of soles that can be replaced, i'e theres a seperate bit of sticky rubber on the base, not a solid rubber sole. The difference between 5.10's and skate shoes is ot less than the difference between a good set of pedals and DMR's.

Why is thick soles a good thing, epecialy as most people spend good money buying thin pedals?

AM40s really are very good. Look OK in the flesh.

5-10's are loads uglier than AM40s, you shouldn't rule the shimanos out on aesthetic grounds.

I'm hearin' ya, BearBack. Oh but wait, i sport the ridiculous white disco slipper shimano jobbies! Damn they're both ugly!
Captain M, get the spd flip flops. and for added style, wear some argyle socks with 'em.

Sid K, no your input v useful. I'm a size 9 so clumpiness not an issue

Gnargnar, great comments about being another part of the protection. Appreciate that skate shoes would be nowhere near as good, but thinking that possibly the MP90's might be close. You are definitely tilting me towards stumping up the extra dosh for the 5-10's

I am sure either Shim or 5-10 would last at least 3 times as long as skate shoes and be stiffer and grippier, so def not going the skate shoe route

Doesn't matter how good the AM40's are. They are white FFS. What more stupid colour can you get for an MTB shoe? Also, most of my gear is black and so is my bike

Ironically it's the white bits that are easiest to wipe clean. The black suedey bits on the other hand are starting to look a little scruffy.
