will it work with deore/xt mtb shifters?
the shimano part number shows it as a mtb rear mech, yet it is mated with road sti's on my tourer.

It is an 8 speed MTB rear mech,I've got one on my road bike with STI shifters.It will also work with 8 speed MTB shifters however not sure if it will work with 9 speed shifters which I presume your deore/xt are.Bikeradar say no and yes.Try it?

it is on a 9 speed set up. new bike 2013 model.

Just checked mine's a 360 8 speed not 390 - bike was upside down 😉
.Yours will be a 9 speed MTB version so should be fine with 9 speed mtb shifters.
