What alternatives for replacing a Shimano SM-BBMT500 on Rocky Mountain Altitude A50 2020?
I would like to change from this - they are just not lasting, last one has crumpled on insertion using a proper tool.
Ideally a screw together system - I think there are a few out there.
Wheels Mfg ones are good in my experience, and don’t require a proprietary tool - uses the FSA MegaExo 48.5mm 16 notch type.
At the end of the day, they all (aftermarket Wheels Mfg, Hope, Praxis etc) use off the shelf bearings that are easily and affordably replaced when time comes, so pick the one you have a tool for, or that the tool is cheapest for.
I have a Wheels Manufacturing one on one of my bikes - you have to press it in to start, but once there it’s been solid. I’ve just had to replace the bearings after 4 years - really straightforward.
The WheelsManu one I have has been relIable. Easy screws together with BB tool. Replaced the bearings (not the whole thing) about every 3 years. Never creaked or made the slightest noise either.
ztto ones, 20 quid on ebay for me
I guess that the bearings aren't top-end but they're replaceable*
*I think; haven't had to yet as I pack 'em up with grease before fitting
I've got the Hope one and the tool. I think it's been in for 8 years now with no problems, still on the original bearings. If you go down the Hope route I can lend you the tool.
Cheers all - we picked up a standard plastic Shimano to get him back pedalling this week.
A wheels manufacturing one is on order though.
Token ninja ones are good of they have your size
Its worth measuring the frame before installing the new BB.
Undersized frames can crush press fit BBs leading to premature wear (new BB feels smooth off the bike, press in and its notchy to turn, remove and it feels smooth again). I have also seen a customer crack an undersized carbon frame when they fitted an alloy BB.
Not saying its the problem you have, buts its worth taking a few minutes to check. The park tool reamer reams to 40.98mm for reference (for PF41). Worth taking a few measurements to try and check its round as well.
