I run an XT Octalink BB with a 118mm axle on my bike. The XTs (ES-71) are no longer made and hard to source. To the eye they look very similar to Shimano's 105 5500 road BBs, also described as Octalink. Are they interchangeable or different standards?

they're different. the splines are shorter/longer.

You have to stick to an ES bottom bracket.
