Are these useable both with and without cleats ie do the cleat bolts go through the sole, if that makes sense?
Sometimes I ride spd, sometimes flats- will the soles leak if I remove the cleats?

The GoreTex sock/liner isn't punctured by the bolts.

FWIW, I use mine with flats quite often - with cleats in.

Thanks Colin.
I'm not sure whether it was a dumb question but the north wave gran canions I have started to leak when I removed the cleats, despite having a goretex liner.
Any downsides to the Shimanos?

If you remove the cleats, you have a proper piece of sole that you can bolt back in

I had NW Grand Canions then went to MT91s. Goretex liners eventually 'fracture' and leak.
Either the NWs are very old and it's a coincidence OR... You're using your flats and hence putting your feet in puddles a lot more than if you were clipped in!

Downsides?
(a) They're not very warm. Size up and wear proper thick socks (they don't have to be rambler red)
(b) The "cuff" is quite wide compared to, say, a MW80. Basically, it's easy to get water/mud/sand in the top of the boot. You could try a small gaiter or make a "gasket" from the wrist off a rubber glove (Marigold Yellow - but only if you can ride to deserve it).

As Deveron53 says, any GTX liner will eventually leak. If you can picture that the soles of your feet are repeatedly pushing tiny bits of grit into it, it's not hard to see why. My MT90s are probably 5 years old now and I still wear them.

I found em warmer than the NW celsius they replaced, much much better, maybe not quite as good as my MW80's. Though I'd agree, neither of Shimano are brilliant once it get below zero (I'm a cold toe sufferer)
What have you used, that you found warmer?

As you say, the MW80's are better. My warning was really not to expect the boots themselves to provide any insulation. My really cold riding last year was done wearing Thinsulate lined snowshoe boots.
