[Closed] Shimano mech cage compatibility

[#12282547]

I've just badly bent my second mech cage in a month. Its Shimano XT12 speed M8100. It is impossible to buy a new cage in the UK right now afaik. The last time I bent it I bought a whole new Deore mech (M6100 I think) and swapped out the cage which seemed to fit perfectly. However, this is an expensive fix and it does seem like I could get hold of cages for older models such as M8000. Can anyone tell me anything about cross compatibility of cages for Shimano? I can buy both cage plates together.

Thanks!

Might be worth a look on Shimanotechdocs, they often used to list cross compatibilities in their EV's parts lists.

Great thanks! Looks like they have outer in stock but no inner - but half way there at least!

The 11 speed won't work with the 12, completely differed geometry, I doubt the 12 speed jockey wheels would even fit in

Ok good to know re 11 speed. So seems like I'm limited to the 6100, 7100, 8100 series - possibly also 5100?

Long cage mechs and ebikes are a terrible and expensive combo 🙂 I think both times it was a stick being thrown up by the back wheel while climbing.. probably would not have happened on a regular bike.

The 8100cage still in stock on Aliexpress and can confirm the inner plate fits and works fine on a Deore 5100 11Spd mech(as thats the set up I have).

Think the RD 5100 and RD 6100 Deore mechs are identical except for the graphics despite what Shimano may have you believe, and the cages between 6/7/8100 appear to be interchangeable just different materials (Alloy or Steel) and finishes(painted or anodised).

Great thanks for the info! It actually surprised me how similar the Deore and XT mechs are side by side. Apart from the bearings in the jockey wheel in XT, functionally they seem identical. All differences are cosmetic and/or very minor weight savings.. anyone saying XT shifts better is probably imagining it!
