those little yellow things, that come in a pair with new brakes. Used to have a set but can't find them and need to shorten some hoses. I am thinking that if I just wrap the hose in a cloth and put in the vice it will be ok ? or any other bodge ideas ?

TBH though i've just fitted a new hose and just pushed the barb in by hand.
