In an attempt to bleed my Shimano M8120 brakes, I was squeezing the lever pretty hard to try to get the bubbles to move and suddenly the lever goes to the bar and oil pours out the caliper.
After taking the caliper apart I see that oil is coming out of one of the pistons and it feels very crunchy. I pull the piston out and it's shattered.
Is it possible to get replacement pistons for these brakes? It's the larger one of that helps. Or am I going to have to get a new caliper?
Thanks in advance.
I think Shimamo dont sell pistons as spares....but i think ebay/aliexpress had some pattern pistons for some shimano calipers.
Thanks, I'll give them a try
would you say you were squeezing the lever a lot harder than you might have done going fast down a trail towards a sharpish bend ?
When I cracked mine I just bought a spare caliper from Tweeks.
I was squeezing it pretty hard, I don't think I would squeeze it that hard on a trail.
The only after market pistons available are the 22mm ones for 2 pot calipers, I need an 18mm one and can't find any Shimano ones, I'm not sure the SRAM ones will for properly.
Looking like my only option is to get a new caliper.
With Shimano it generally results in needing a new caliper. It must have already been damaged - I wouldn’t have thought you can excert enough force with your hand through the system to shatter a piston.
They'll likely warranty that. It's not uncommon on shimanos 4 pot brakes.
Hi Ben, I'll send you a PM as it's on a Bird.
