do the newer shimano brake levers work ok with older calipers - xt m785 caliper needs a new lever?

Yeah, a new m8000 or m7000 lever should work. I have m7000 levers on m685 calipers that are the same era as m785s.
But I have had some problems with a wandering bite point on one of them though. If you can find some new old stock m785 or m685 levers that might be preferable.
