I've been tasked with repairing my mate's bike after a stick/mech interaction which has destroyed the old 9-sp XT mech.
He doesn't want to spend too much as it's just for pootling around on.
Found an Alivio rear mech but have no experience of the groupset.
Is it any good?

Works perfectly fine. Nothing wrong at all with the cheaper groupsets aside from a little extra weight.

Currently using it on my main mountain bike.

Alivio is 1 below Deore.
It's fine from a purely functional perspective, it may not feel quite as snappy as a better mech, will weigh more and may not last as long, but it'll do the job I suspect.

They work perfectly fine. You really can't tell the difference when you're riding.

Rear mechs are the place to save money IMO. it's the shifters that make the biggest difference to feel.

Go for it...

Works absolutely fine, I put Alivio on my sons hardtail.

If anything, he found it a great improvement when first fitted as everything shifted cleanly and smoothly with new levers, cables and rear mech.

I have the latest Alvio on my Marin Muirwoods and it's great for an entry level groupset.

I upgrade the chainset from Suntour to Alvio too and was really impressed with the quality, no worse than some of the Deore stuff I've had in the past.

I fixed up an old bike for my bro's girlfriend using the alivio rear ( shadow one with barrel adjuster) to replace a knackered deore, it's been flawless.
