Got a 53/39 5800 crankset, would a 36 tooth inner run ok.? I know the BCD is fine but would the shifting be compromised.?

Yes....to what degree is debatable.Shimano claim that they they should only ever be used as pairs for 'optimum' shifting.
In the real world I've mixed makes and sizes (quite wildly) and have always (ok with one or two exceptions....I'm looking at YOU Mr Sram) managed to make them work satisfactorily.

I might invest £17 quid and find out.

I've ran a 34 inner with a 52 outer which shifted as good as the 36 did, so would think a 36/53 would be fine

I have a spare new 6800 36t I'm looking to sell if you are interested - wouldn't be less than £17 though. I assume that is for 5800 one?

Coolio I'll keep that in mind. Going to see how much it is through work first.
