[Closed] Shimano 5500 set up position

I have a USPS trek from about 2001 & see that on the original pics for the bike the set up for the handlebars and hoods seems very different to the current set up over the last few years. My question is are the brake/gear levers bracketed to fit at a different angle to the more recent offerings? I have 6800 and have tried different handlebars in the past but still struggling to get the set up how I would like. They seem to drop down when aligned. I was looking at fitting some compact handlebars but not sure how this older style lever will match up.
