[Closed] Shimano 2012 XT Shifters - Should they be clunky?

[#4189958]

Got out on my new bike for the first time on Sunday evening.

All was ok apart from the fact that I found the right hand trigger shifter quite agricultural and clunky.

Pushing the shifter up the block is on the very positive side ie a good shove positively clicks in, but on down shifting its just doesn't feel smooth as though some thing is cathing inside the shifter mechanism before it releases and it will shift. This some times leads to you changing down more than 1 gear in 1 go.

Is this how its supposed to be ie a very positive action? To me though it feels like some thing is failing in the mechanism.

I found mine new XTR ones a bit more positive than the previous generation XTR but that maybe because the old ones were getting worn.

Sounds like something might be up with yours though as I wouldn't say mine are like you describe.

My 2012 XT shifters are smooth as anything. They feel much nicer than the SLX on my other bike. Maybe they are set-up better, but they do feel superb. I'd say you have a problem. Sorry I can't point you in the direction of what it might be though

Cable routed correctly in the shifter? Sometimes if you get it outside of the little bit for the cable in the shifter, you can end up with that sort of symptom.

Also, check that you haven't a crimped outer restricting the inner.

I did find my new XTR shifters were more positive too than previous gens - likewise a new XT I use on my commuter. However, shouldn't be that hard to use.

Its a brand new insurance replacement bike (from Cardiff) so could be a bugger to sort.

The rear mech moves fine, will check other suggestions tonight.
