I suspect I'll need to replace the rear mech soon so it makes sense to get one that works as well as possible with my current set-up (XT 11-36 with a Wolf 42t expander).
Is there a standout mech I should be going for, or is it just a case of crunching the specs and buying a longer B adjustment screw?
I think you need to budget for a Rad cage to get the best result. You'd have thought there'd be some second hand bargains as others go 11 speed
Think GS/SGS Shimano mechs are much or a muchness when it comes to 42t, some frames will require extremes of B-screw adjustment, some won't.
I'd get a cheap one and use the spare cash on a OneUp Rad cage, when I has running 1x10 the Rad case moved it frpm "just OK" to "shifting perfectly".
What I found is, with a medium cage XT I got it working fine but it was a pain, and had little margin for error- it went sloppy during muddy rides and if the mech got bumped it all went wrong. With the radcage, it's much easier to set up, and more reliable/less picky. if I was building a 1x10 today I'd definitely use a radcage or maybe the goatlink.
TBH once you start with all these costs, the cost argument can stop making much sense.
Maybe an XT 11 speed mech if it works as suggested in this thread

Yeah... May just end up going 11. ๐
I just used a long cage 10 speed shimano shadow plus mech and a longer B screw.
Ordinary XT long cage mech here with my Sunrace 11-42 cassette, albeit with the B screw wound in as far as it'll go.
Shifting quality is excellent - indistinguishable from the stock 11-36 setup.
I am planning on going 11 speed, but only when the 11-46 cassette makes an appearance.
Zee with radr cage worked superbly for me.

Thanks all. Seems a radr cage is the short-term fix, which is also cheaper than a new rear mech - win!
